Abstract This paper presents a receiver front-end fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS process to receive a wide range of high current input from the avalanche photodiode (APD). The transimpedance amplifier (TIA) consists of a resistive feedback inverter and three cascaded Cherry-Hooper amplifiers (CHAs) to obtain a high gain-bandwidth product. The TIA automatically subtracts input DC current. In addition, using inductors in the Cherry-Hooper amplifiers, the bandwidth of the TIA is improved from 14 GHz to 29.5 GHz. The receiver front-end chip has an active area of 0.22 mm2, and its energy efficiency is 1.3 pJ/bit. Input DC current range is measured up to 3 mA at 28 Gb/s.
